For our families,
who made the two of us possible.
It was raining in Austin, which it never is in October, and the coffee shop on South Congress had exactly one dry table. Elena was already at it.
Marcus asked if the other chair was taken. It was, she said, by her bag. He moved the bag. That was the whole first conversation, and she still tells it as if it were longer.
He had a plan with a boat in it. The boat fell through. What was left was the pier at Lady Bird Lake at six in the morning and a ring in a coffee cup, which, in hindsight, was always going to be the better story.
The pier, 6:04 am
I promise to move the bag. I promise to keep the chair. I promise that when the boat falls through, we go to the pier.
